Electronics like desktop computers, video game stations, even your old microwave were all once expensive investments. Maybe you have a child about to leave home, or children that already have who are hoping you will store their belongings until they’re ready to move them into their own homes. There are many reasons that it might not be time to give away electronics. That said, you also don’t have to have these same items cluttering up your basement. An Ottawa storage unit is a great place to store these bulky items into they are ready for their homes. Of course, storing electronics requires a little more attention than your cross country skiing gear.
What Electronics Can I Store?
Desktop computers, printers, scanners, power tools, televisions, kitchen appliances, etc can all be safely and confidently kept in your Ottawa storage unit. However, there are a few extra steps that you should take to ensure you unpack them in the same condition you packed them up in!
Without proper storage techniques, electronics are prone to rust, mold, cracking, or even breaking.
Climate Controlled Storage Units
It isn’t hard to imagine what heat and cold can do to electronics. There is a reason you don’t leave your laptop in your car overnight during Ottawa’s extreme winters! For the same reason, opt for a climate controlled storage unit if you plan to keep electronics in there. At Acceptable Storage we offer both heated and unheated storage units. Our storage units range in size from 280 to 2000 cubic feet. To find a rate on a heated storage unit, contact us here. With a heated storage unit, you can be confident knowing that your electronics are both out of your way, and in a temperature controlled environment.
Preparing Electronics for Storage
When getting your electronics ready for storage avoid wrapping them in plastic. Plastic encourages the accumulation of moisture which is detrimental to electronics. Instead, use old sheets, towels, or blankets to protect your electronics from bumps and scratches. Make sure that you have removed any detachable cords and wires. You might consider taping together relevant cords and labelling them for easy access when you need the device. The last thing you will want to do is search through a box of jumbled wires looking for the right one! Along with each device, toss in a silica gel packet. These will absorb any moisture that naturally exists in the air. Make sure to remove the batteries from any battery operated device. If left long enough, batteries tend to leak acid and cause erosion.
Once you have removed cords and batteries, wrapped in soft layers and added a silica gel package, use pallets or boards to avoid stacking electronics directly on top of each other. And always label electronics as “Fragile” just in case it isn’t you who does the unloading next time your family needs something!

Dear Travel-Mor Clients,
Please note that any trailer/RV that is dropped off for service work MUST BE EMPTIED of all personal belongings. This includes floor areas, or any specific areas where we need to complete work (for example: showers/tubs, cabinetry, outside compartments, under bed storage areas, etc.)
If these areas are filled with personal items, we will refuse to work on the trailer until it has been emptied.
