Frequently Asked Questions

Shrink wrapping a boat isn’t the same as shrink wrapping leftovers after a family BBQ. In the case of shrink wrapping a boat, a layer of polyethylene is cut to fit over the top and around your boat. The layer is then heated to shrink and seal your boatThe layer protects your boat from damage caused by rain, snow, and the sun's rays when the sun is outside. Shrink wrapping is recommended for those who store their boats outside, as it helps protect it against the elements. Since shrink wrap is impermeable, it is essential that your boat be dry before wrapping. If a boat still has moisture on the inside and is shrink wrapped, mold and mildew can build up and damage your boat.
In order to prepare your boat for storage, there are a number of things you can do. You will want to make sure to remove fabric, canvas, and leather items from the boat interior wherever possible to prevent buildup of mold and mildew. You will also have to empty the water tank and dry out your boat as well remove electronics. The boat engine and components should also be prepared for storage and winterization. This includes use of fogging oil to protect it from rust, performing an oil change, adding antifreeze, removing batteries and drive belts. While this sounds like a lot of work, Acceptable Storage offers a rage of onboard/outboard winterization services to make things easier for you.
On top of offering a variety of boat storage options, acceptable storage also provides a free boat wash station equipped with soap, pails, brushes, and vacuums which is available to all clients. For those who choose to put shrink wrap on their boats, it will be removed in the spring to avoid heat and moisture buildup which can damage your boat. Additionally, clients who store their boats at Acceptable Storage receive 15% off all ordered boat accessories and parts.
Choosing to store your boat outside throughout the winter is the worst thing you could do for your boat. The extreme cold, ice, and snow can fade the colours and paint on your boat, compromise its structural integrity, and could ruin the cover as well. To avoid unnecessary damages and potential insect or animal infestation, your best bet is to store your boat in a climate-controlled storage facility.
